Large Scrimshaw Carved Tooth
Description

A LARGE AND VERY INTERESTING SCRIMSHAW TOOTH. One side engraved with a large port view of an English ship at anchor. Nicely executed with figurehead shown and flags flying both fore and aft. The reverse with a sprawling scene depicting a man on horseback riding past a well dressed, seated man who wears a top hat. In the background is a church and cemetery. Below the scene is the inscription "An Apothecary on a White horse rode by on his Avocations". The scene is an accurate and direct copy of an illustration from an 1830 publication of the poem "The Devil's Walk". 8 1/4" l. Condition excellent.
