Naval Battle
Description

19TH CENTURY WITH A WAR OF 1812 NAVAL BATTLE SCENE. Nice strong depiction of The President Engaging The Endymion, While Pursued By The British Squadron. The artist directly copied the scene from an illustration in Abel Bowen's book "The Naval Monument". The reverse with a starboard view of a whaleship hoisting a blanket of blubber while cutting in a whale. Meticulously rendered but it seems the artist, for whatever reason, never finished the water. Almost solid tooth that measures 5 7/8" l. x 2" w. Condition fine. Nice age color throughout. It's interesting to note that this exact illustration was used again in 1831 by Horace Kimball in his book "American Naval Battles" but Kimball identified the scene as "Escape of the Constitution from a British Squadron". Overall a handsome and well executed tooth.
